Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal that my kid doesn’t eat much of their lunch at school?

There are many reasons why a kid may not eat their lunch at school. Distraction can be a big factor as kids can be so busy chatting with friends that they forget to eat. A lack of time can also be an issue as some schools have very short lunch breaks. Unfortunately, there is not much to be done about these sorts of challenges to them eating their lunches. On the other hand, there are some reasons for kids not eating their lunches that can be resolved or deserve more attention. Some kids, especially younger kids, can struggle to open their lunch containers. If this is the case, either spend some time teaching them how to open and close the containers or look for gear that is easier for them to use. Other kids don’t eat their lunch because they don’t like what you packed. If this is the case, sitting down to have a conversation where you brainstorm ideas together (using the ideas above) can be very helpful. And there are also kids who feel anxious or overwhelmed by eating in front of other people. If this is the case, then working with the school and your child to find a solution is a worthwhile endeavor.

What is the best way to keep food warm until lunch time?

Thermoses are specially designed to keep the food inside warm for a prolonged amount of time. If your child is complaining that the food still isn’t warm enough, try filling your thermos with very hot/boiling water and letting it sit for a few minutes. Then, pour the water out and put in your warmed-up food. The hot water will have heated up the inside of the thermos, which will help the to keep the food warm for a bit longer.

What is the best way to keep food cool in a lunch box?

Insulated lunch boxes are a great place to start. If that doesn’t do the trick, then consider adding an ice pack or a frozen juice box or smoothie tube (which will thaw by lunchtime) to keep things chilled.

Can I pack lunch the night before?

Absolutely. Packing the full lunch or even components of the lunch ahead of time can be a great time saver. In particular, preparing fruits and vegetables, shelf-stable components, and packing up leftovers all work well.

Will a sandwich get soggy if I make it the night before?

It depends on what goes into the sandwich. Wet ingredients such as tomatoes and condiments such as mayonnaise and mustard can lead to soggy sandwiches if assembled too soon. But assembling the rest of the sandwich the night before and then adding those moist ingredients in the morning (or even packing them to be put on at school) can work very well.
